Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
